When creating written content for google, there’s quite a few rules you have to follow, but the main point to consider is that you want it to be natural. It can be quite tempting to start stuffing keywords on to your page but that’s not going to help your website be found in google.

For newer sites, it’s a lot harder for content to rank because your website has less trust with google so content creation might not be for you right now. If it’s month one for your business, is spending money on SEO really worth it? We’re an SEO company but we’d say no, if you’re a small business with limited resources, your business might be dead in the water by month 6 when your SEO efforts are starting to kick in.

Finding out what content to create on your website

One of the most difficult things is finding content to create. If you’ve struggled with this in the past and now you’re trying to correct your website and get better rankings in google you’ve got a few techiniques you can try.

Go to google keyword planner and see what’s being searched, then head over to a tool like sem rush or Ahrefs which calculate website traffic, so you can type in a keyword on google, take the top results and see how much traffic that web page is getting to see if it’s worth it for you to make content about the same topic.

How long should my content be?

Remember when you used to google something and you’d get an answer with about 300 words on the page and maybe less?

This happened all the time, it still happens but those websites have high domain authorities, it used to be so much easier to rank on google but now it’s all about high quality content and high quality backlinks from websites in your industry.

To get your content noticed, now, you need to have content that’s thousands of words long. Did you know the average 1st page top result on google had an average word account of 2000 words? 2000 words does sound like a lot but this type of long form content helps your website in several ways.
Firstly, it avoids Keyword cannibalisation which is where your website has 10 different pages about a certain subject, so google is forced to choose which is the relevant page which it doesn’t always get right. With having different topics about the same subjects on one page this helps keeps things simple for the search engines.

Secondly, 2000 words doesn’t just mean, add 2000 words of anything and it’ll rank. We need to perform research on what’s being searched around a that topic. By finding different branches we can build a page that answer’s questions. Not only that, but because you’ve got a good amount of words on the page, you’ll be be ranking for more keywords with a higher variety.

Long form, informative content keeps people on your pages longer. The longer people are spending on your site, the better your website metrics will be. If you have a good amount of blog pages around different topics that are all informative and helpful, these pages will rank well.

But guess what? Because your content is so good, people and other businesses may come across your content. They can either share it on social media or maybe place a link on their website.

For example let’s say a solicitor, they could be doing a page on mortgages where they explain the best ways to go about getting a mortgage and because they are located in Manchester they want to help out a manchester business. So they find a small independent mortgage lender who’s got some pretty epic content, in the solicitors page they can place a link to the the mortgage lender.
